Activity 2: Influences on the Worker-Researcher

Whilst considering the role of researcher within my own field of work, I keep stumbling across a various number of major advantages as well as of course disadvantages.

If I consider the topic I have chosen, I realize that it is something that I am surrounded by daily and a topic that inspired me in the first instance. This being so I believe that working within these surroundings on a day-to-day basis, will help to keep my inspiration renewed and hopefully I will constantly learn new facts that may come in handy.

The research I have decided to carry out is of a qualitative nature, in which interviews will be held with various professionals that fall under a certain criteria. These people will be people who are in the same “industry” as myself, this will make the ease of conversation and understanding when discussing past experiences much easier to follow and analyze.

The criteria under which the candidates will be selected is quite specific, and if I did not have easy access to a wide network of people that belong to the industry, this research would be extremely difficult.
Being myself part of the industry also puts me in a position in which I posses my own personal experiences and knowledge, which makes the experiences related to the subject more accessible and understandable to me.
However if I consider a lot of these factors, I can worry about the possibility of becoming Bias or creating an emotional attachment that will affect my way of interpreting the experiences given resolving with unfair results, however as I do not have a preferable expectation, just a hope for results I don’t believe this will be an issue.

Obviously when working on something interpretational it is more advisable to possess a minimum amount of personal knowledge about the person relating the experiences, thus friends or close work colleagues are generally not recommended. This is something I think would normally be an issue when carrying out research in a workplace, however I am lucky enough that within the industry, the ease of networking between different performers and the sheer amount of choice makes it easy to contact, find and work with professionals with whom you have absolutely no personal attachment.
Having taken all this into consideration I truly believe my role as a worker-researcher will be effective and even helpful, I also understand the possible disadvantages it holds but with these in mind I believe that overcoming them will not be a problem.
