Campus Session 1: Intro: Research Topic; Sourcing Data; Learning Diary
In this module we will learn how to plan and research for our project.
CHOOSING A TOPIC
Things we should think about when choosing a subject are:
• Problem solving
• Motivation
• Future use in career.
The research project must have: key features, a defined start and end, an organized plan.
Things to keep in mind when choosing a topic
• Find out what’s been done before
• Find information on the chosen topic
• Try to discover something new
• Who will benefit from it?
• Get a deeper understanding of your chosen topic
• Ask questions
• Look at the variables in a situation, what happens if one of these change?
• List of concepts
• Problem-issue based
• Mind maping (rosemarymcguiness.blogspot.com)
• Talk to peers
• Talk to Employer-manager-director
• Don’t wonder from your topic
CHOOSING MY TOPIC
So I sat down with various ideas going through my head, what exactly do I want my research project to be based on?
Having done previous research I had the beginning topic “how long term acting affects the personality” however I needed to narrow this down, and try and figure out exactly what it was that I wanted.
Having already done all the basics I knew that my research project had to be something related to me as a person and to my surroundings. This is difficult as a performer as I am constantly starting new projects and jobs and ending them just as quickly.
So I started looking at all the factors around me to try and narrow it down.
I am surrounded by:
• Auditions
• Acting
• Networking
• Image
• Singing
• Dancing
• Agents
Types of people I am most surrounded by
• Actors
• Out of work actors
Why have I chosen this topic?
Having played a Disney princess in a play for four months, I have found numerous changes in my personality, similar traits to what I was playing.
This brought up the question. Have these changes come from acting the character so much it has become habit? Or are they simply changes that would have happened and are simply coincidence?
How does this topic affect my current and future career?
I am a working actress. I am continually playing the part of different characters.
een surrounded by actors some that have been working many years. It makes me curious to find out if these people have adopted traits from the various personalities they’ve played and if this is the case, how that may affect me in ten years time.
It is a general stereotype that all actors are eccentric, is it possible that this is because they are formed by leftovers of all the characters they have played all mixed and matched?
As an actor you are always told “life experience makes you a better actor” but does been a better actor affect your life experience?
If acting does affect the personality, why is this? And how can we change it?
Having done my research and spoken to a few people ive come to realize that many of the situations in which this happens is when “method acting” is used, this is a specific technique. Also it is a technique that I myself am very fond of.
I have also found out that in the acting world there is currently a big debate as to weather method acting is safe, especially with major characters (heath ledger used method acting while playing the joker)
This makes me want to find out one specific thing
Does method acting have the danger of affecting the personality more than other types of acting?
This will be a project in which I will compare the main acting methods, speak to practitioners of these and investigate disorders in each, I would like to finally come to the conclusion if there is more history or disorder with method acting, or if this is just a myth.
And with that, I think ive finally chosen my topic!!
YEY!!! =D
